When the Normans arrived in 1169, Dundrum castle was built to help fortify the area. The original village was built up around the castle and was considered a defensive outpost against assualts and raids from Irish tribes and families.
The Gaelic translation of Dundrum is 'ridge fort'.
In 1619 William Fitzwilliam was granted the castle in recogniton for his bravery and courage, and his family held on to the Fitzwilliam seat until 1790. Sadly, the castle was never re-occupied and exists today as ruins overlooking the Dundrum Bypass.
Today, Dundrum has expanded beyond all recognition. In 2004 the LUAS, Dublin Light Railway System was launched which passes through Dundrum over the large cable-stayed historic 'William Dargan' bridge. The journey to Dublin city centre takes a mere 15 minutes. The success of the LUAS is evidenced by the fact that in its first two years over 50 million journeys had been made.
In 2005, the new Dundrum Town Centre opened its doors to the public. The centre boasts numerous shops and boutiques, department stores such as Harvey Nicholls and the newly arrived Hamleys toystore, not to mention some excellent restaurants.
Dundrum Town Centre won the 2007 European Shopping Centre of the Year. As Don Nugent, the Centre Director (who himself won the award for Shopping Centre Manager of the Year) says, 'quite simply, Dundrum Shopping Centre has raised the bar internationally for Shopping Centre Development'.
All this has served to ensure Dundrum is now one of the most attractive locations within Dublin to live today.
